Bijli Sakhi Yojana Update: Women Can Earn up to ₹50,000 a Month – Learn How to Apply, Eligibility, and More Details

The ‘Bijli Sakhi’ initiative, launched by the Uttar Pradesh government in May 2020, is providing employment opportunities to rural women. Inspired by the success of the ‘Banking Sakhi’ scheme, the Bijli Sakhi Yojana aims to empower women in rural areas. Over two years since its inception, the scheme has seen remarkable progress. A total of 5,395 women have been involved in collecting electricity bills worth ₹625 million in rural areas, contributing significantly to both their income and the state’s energy sector development.

What is UP Bijli Sakhi Yojana 2024?

The UP Bijli Sakhi Yojana was launched by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as a special employment initiative aimed at empowering women in rural areas. The scheme allows women to collect electricity bills directly from their homes, saving citizens the trouble of visiting government offices.

Key Features of the Scheme

Launched in May 2020, the initiative is part of the Uttar Pradesh Banking Correspondent Sakhi Yojana. Under this, women volunteers are trained and appointed to conduct door-to-door meter readings and bill collection. This not only makes it easier for villagers to pay their electricity bills but also provides women with the opportunity to earn a regular income.

Partnership with UPPCL and National Rural Livelihood Mission

On the guidance of CM Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) signed an agreement with the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) to enable self-help groups across the state to collect bill payments at citizens’ doorsteps. Currently, 73 cluster-level federations are registered with UPPCL across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh. More information can be found on the UPPCL portal: UPPCL Portal.

How much commission on how many bills

Under the Bijli Sakhi scheme, women in rural areas earn a commission of Rs 20 on every bill payment up to Rs 2000. One per cent commission is given on bills above Rs 2000. Similarly, in urban areas, ‘Bijali Sakhis’ get Rs 12 for every bill up to Rs 3000 and 0.4 per cent commission on bills above Rs 3,000.
