Ayushman Card vs Ayushman Vay Vandana Card: The eligibility criteria for the Ayushman Card and the Ayushman Vay Vandana Card are different, although both are part of the government’s efforts to provide affordable healthcare facilities to eligible citizens. Understanding these differences is important before applying for either card, as the rules regarding eligibility, age and income requirements are not the same.
Ayushman Card vs Ayushman Vay Vandana Card Difference
The regular Ayushman Card is issued under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). To receive its benefits, applicants must meet the eligibility criteria prescribed under the scheme. Beneficiaries are identified based on the government’s specified parameters, and not every citizen is automatically eligible for a regular Ayushman Card. Eligible families can access cashless hospitalisation facilities at empanelled public and private hospitals, subject to the scheme’s rules and coverage limits.
On the other hand, the Ayushman Vay Vandana Card has been introduced specifically to extend healthcare benefits to senior citizens aged 70 years and above. One of its biggest advantages is that eligibility is not linked to income or financial status. Whether a senior citizen belongs to a low-income family, a middle-class household or a financially well-off background, they can apply for the card once they meet the age requirement. In other words, all Indian citizens aged 70 years and above are eligible, irrespective of their economic background.
Under this initiative, eligible senior citizens receive health coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per year under AB PM-JAY. For senior citizens aged 70 and above who belong to families already covered by the scheme, a separate additional coverage arrangement applies. The scheme aims to reduce the financial burden of medical treatment and ensure that elderly citizens can access quality healthcare without worrying excessively about hospital expenses.
Therefore, the main difference between the two cards lies in their eligibility conditions. While the regular Ayushman Card depends on the prescribed beneficiary eligibility criteria, the Ayushman Vay Vandana Card is available to all senior citizens aged 70 years and above, regardless of income. This makes the Vay Vandana initiative particularly beneficial for elderly people who may not qualify for the regular Ayushman Card but still need financial support for healthcare expenses.
