Utpanna Ekadashi 2025: Ekadashi is considered highly significant in Hinduism. The Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Margashirsha is called Utpanna Ekadashi. Fasting on this day is believed to cleanse one of all sins and lead to salvation.
Mythological legends say that Goddess Ekadashi manifested from the body of Lord Vishnu on Utpanna Ekadashi. He also killed a demon named Moor. This is why this Ekadashi is called Utpanna Ekadashi. Today, we will tell you what to do and what not to do on this Ekadashi.
What should be done on Utpanna Ekadashi?
- On the Dashami Tithi (the day before the fast), one should eat satvik food and observe celibacy.
- On Ekadashi, one should wake up before sunrise and bathe. Afterwards, one should take a vow to fast while chanting the mantra” Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevay”.
- During the puja, idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Ekadashi Devi should be installed alongside Lord Vishnu. Offer yellow flowers, fruits, incense, a lamp, and Tulsi leaves.
- On Ekadashi, worship the Tulsi plant and light a ghee lamp in the evening. However, remember not to touch the Tulsi plant during the puja.
- One should read or listen to the story of the Ekadashi fast. One should chant the Vishnu Sahasranama or Om Namo Narayanaya mantra throughout the day.
- One should also keep a vigil at night, singing bhajans and kirtans.
- After this, the Ekadashi fast should be broken on the Dwadashi Tithi. During the breaking of the fast, one should feed Brahmins and give donations.
What should not be done on Utpanna Ekadashi?
- Rice, barley, and pulses should not be consumed on Utpanna Ekadashi. It is said that eating rice on this day is considered a sin.
- On Ekadashi, one should avoid consuming garlic, onions, and non-vegetarian food. Also, one should not consume any intoxicants.
- During the Ekadashi fast, one should not harbour feelings of anger or jealousy towards anyone.
- Tulsi leaves should not be plucked on Ekadashi, as this day is a Tulsi fast. Tulsi leaves should be plucked and kept ready for worship a day in advance.
- It is considered essential to observe complete celibacy on Ekadashi.
