Smart Meter: Big news for everyone. The Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh has provided significant relief to electricity users. They have eliminated the prepaid smart meter system. As a result, approximately 75 lakh prepaid smart meters will transition to postpaid overnight. This transition will commence on the night of May 9th and will be finalized by May 10th.
This decision was made in response to the challenges faced by electricity consumers and their increasing frustration. Many consumers reported issues such as unjust balance deductions, rapid meter readings, and inflated bills. With the switch to postpaid meters, consumers will now receive bills based on their monthly usage, eliminating the need for prepaid recharges.
Following this change, consumers are concerned about the status of their recharge balance. Rest assured, there is no need to worry about any remaining balance. The leftover balance on a prepaid meter will be reflected in the first postpaid bill of the next month, shown separately. Once the meter is converted to postpaid, the department will require a security deposit from consumers, which will be included in the bill. For larger consumers, this deposit may be collected in four installments.
The bill will be issued on the 10th of each month
After the transition to postpaid, consumers will receive their electricity bill on the 10th of every month, with a 15-day window to make the payment. If the bill is not paid, the connection will be automatically disconnected. However, the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Consumer Council has raised concerns regarding the quality of the smart meters. They have pointed out that issues with meters installed between 2019 and 2022, such as SMS delays, meter errors, and overloading, continue to affect the new meters. This change is viewed as a significant advancement in enhancing the power system in Uttar Pradesh.
The electricity department has urged consumers to keep their mobile numbers updated, as bills will be sent directly to their mobile phones. If for some reason the bill is not received, it can also be viewed through chatbots and online services.
Until now, consumers with prepaid meters had to recharge frequently. They feared power cuts as soon as their balance ran out. However, with the introduction of the postpaid system, this problem will be eliminated. Furthermore, complaints such as fast meter running, unused balance deductions, and high bills are also expected to be alleviated.
