Ration Card: Big news for Ration Card holders. In a significant relief for the residents of the capital, the Delhi government has restarted the process of issuing new ration cards and adding names of family members after almost eight years.
As per the Food and Consumer Affairs Department, citizens can now apply online via the e-district portal. The government has also initiated a review of old applications that have been pending for quite some time, allowing applicants to resubmit them along with the necessary documents. A helpline number, 1967, has been established for this purpose.
Applications must be made on the e-district portal
According to the new guidelines, only online applications for ration cards will be accepted from now on. Applicants can follow these steps:
- Step 1: Visit the e-District portal.
- Step 2: Log in using your user ID and password.
- Step 3: Navigate to the “Apply Online” menu.
- Step 4: Check the status of your application in the “Pending for Submission” section.
- Step 5: Resubmit your application along with the required documents.
In Delhi, over 1.7 million ration card holders currently distribute rations to around 7.3 million people each month through 2,000 ration shops. The government also announced plans to issue two million new ration cards in February 2026.
These documents are essential for the application
Aadhaar cards for all family members are required when applying for a ration card. If the address on the Aadhaar card differs, a Delhi residence certificate will be necessary. Additionally, a family income certificate issued by the Revenue Department, an affidavit of eligibility, and a copy of the electricity bill must also be submitted. Officials have stated that online applications will undergo thorough vetting at the Food Supply Officer level. If needed, officials may also visit the homes of applicants to verify the card.
The eldest woman in the family will be the head
Under the Delhi Food Security Rules, 2026, the eldest female member of the family will be designated as the head of the household in the ration card application. The female member must be 18 years of age or older. If there are no adult women in the family, the eldest male member will be temporarily designated as the head of the household.
Income limit increased
To expand the benefits of the public distribution system to more people, the Delhi government has increased the annual family income limit from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.20 lakh. This will allow more families to benefit from the ration scheme.
These people will not get ration card
As per government regulations, ration cards will not be provided to specific groups of individuals. This includes owners of land or houses in areas designated as A to E, income taxpayers, those with four-wheel-drive vehicles, government workers, and individuals with electricity connections that exceed two kilowatts. The government emphasizes that these new regulations are designed to promote transparency and efficiency in delivering ration services to families in need.
