Ration Card Rules: Many essential documents in the country are used in our daily lives. From opening a bank account to availing government schemes, having the correct documents is crucial to proving identity and eligibility. The ration card is one such important document through which people can avail the benefits of food security schemes. However, the Delhi government has implemented some new rules related to ration cards for the year 2026. Following these rules, some people will no longer be considered eligible for a ration card. Let’s understand in simple terms who will no longer be eligible.
Who will not be able to apply?
In Delhi, income and property criteria have been set for a ration card. If a family’s annual income exceeds ₹1.2 lakh, they cannot apply for a ration card. Additionally, if a family member owns a permanent house or flat in an A, B, C, D, or E category colony in Delhi, that family will also be ineligible. Families with a member who pays income tax will also be excluded from the scheme.
Anyone with an electricity connection of more than 2 kilowatts may also have their application rejected. Families owning a car or other four-wheeled vehicle may also be excluded from the eligibility list. The government aims to ensure that the benefits of the scheme reach only economically weaker and needy families.
Complete verification will be done online
Under the new system, eligibility will be determined based on criteria such as income, assets, vehicle ownership, and electricity consumption. The entire process is being integrated with digital and online verification to ensure transparency and facilitate the identification of fraudulent beneficiaries. These rules will affect both those who already enjoy the benefits of ration cards and those who wish to apply for a new one. If someone fails to meet the prescribed criteria, their application may be rejected.
How to apply?
According to the new rules, only online applications for ration cards will be accepted. When applying, you must submit the Aadhaar numbers of all family members, income certificates, residence certificates, and other necessary documents digitally. The application will be reviewed by a district-level committee, and a ration card will only be issued if all conditions are met. Therefore, thoroughly verify your income, assets, and other documents before applying to avoid any problems later. The government’s goal is to ensure that the benefits of the Food Security Scheme reach only the right and most needy people.
