Virtual Net Metering: Electricity to Be Bought and Sold Through Mobile Apps, Government Nears Big Decision

Delhi is going to walk the path of a big change in the field of electricity management. Very soon, common people will be able to buy and sell electricity with each other through a mobile app. And this new system is being called virtual net metering. Delhi’s Electricity Regulatory Commission has already issued guidelines regarding this project. And the three electricity distribution companies of the capital have been instructed to keep at least 1000 customers ready in the initial phase.

What is this virtual net metering?

Virtual net metering is a technology where solar electricity generated at one place can be shared among multiple customers. That too through a mobile app. That is, those who do not have any space to install solar panels on the roof of their house or do not have free space, will also get the benefit of solar electricity.

Suppose, 20 residents of a multi-storey building have installed a common solar plant in an empty space. In that case, the electricity generated will be shared separately among everyone. And everyone will get a bill for their own consumption. But yes, a smart meter will be required for this.

Work will be done through mobile apps

Meanwhile, a special mobile app will be at the center of this new system. Through this app, customers will be able to buy and sell electricity, set their own prices, and even see how many units have been sold or purchased. And they will also be able to track how much money has been earned or saved. The most important thing is that these transactions will be recorded digitally. As a result, transparency will increase.

What are the benefits?

Through virtual net metering, firstly, customers will be able to earn by selling excess electricity. That is, those who produce solar electricity will be able to earn big money by selling that electricity. Secondly, buyers will often be able to get electricity at a lower price than the government rate, that is, at an affordable price. And thirdly, even if there is no space on the roof, customers will have the opportunity to use solar or solar power and the use of renewable energy will increase and carbon emissions will be reduced.
