CBSE Class 10 Board Exams 2026 : The Central Board of Secondary Education has established its dual annual Class 10 board examination schedule which will begin in the 2026 academic year. Sanyam Bharadwaj explained that students must take the first board examination but they can choose to take the second board examination only to improve their grades.
The board established clear regulations which define the requirements for both the initial and subsequent examinations
The CBSE examination system requires students to take both tests because their selection between the two examinations is not permitted. The first board exam functions as the primary examination which all students must complete. The second exam functions as an additional attempt which students should treat as their main option to take.
The board wants students to prepare seriously for the first exam instead of depending on the second one.
The second board exam exists to provide students with an additional chance to demonstrate their improved performance
The second exam includes the following essential components:
• It is completely optional
• It is only for improvement, not compulsory
• The better score out of two attempts will be considered
• Students can opt for improvement in up to three subjects
The system establishes academic requirements which students must meet while reducing their overall academic workload.
The rules for students who fail their exams
The first exam results require CBSE to explain student outcomes when students fail to pass the first exam.
• Students who fail to pass one or two subjects can take the second exam
• Students who fail three or more subjects cannot participate in the second exam
• Students must retake the board exams during the next academic year
The second exam functions as an opportunity for students to improve their scores because it should not be used as a substitute for regular study sessions.
Exam syllabus and pattern
The two exam attempts will use the complete syllabus and identical question paper format. The second attempt will not include any syllabus cuts or particular examination formats. Students who study effectively for the initial exam will be prepared for the second exam.

CBSE established the two-exam system as a solution to reduce student stress created by single-exam systems which prevent students from improving their performance. The system promotes students to develop regular study habits while they prepare for board examinations through balanced exam progress.
