8th Pay Commission: The central government has shared some important news about the 8th Pay Commission. On Tuesday, February 3, 2026, they confirmed in the Rajya Sabha that the 8th Central Pay Commission has been set up and is progressing with its tasks. In a written response to a question from Rajya Sabha MP Javed Ali Khan, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary mentioned that the government announced the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission along with its terms of reference on November 3, 2025.

What did the government say?

The government also made it clear that the 8th Pay Commission is expected to present its recommendations within 18 months of its establishment. This means that central government employees and pensioners will need to be patient a bit longer. The commission has been assigned the job of providing recommendations on all aspects of salaries, allowances, and pensions for central government employees. It’s anticipated that the commission’s suggestions could result in adjustments to the salaries and pensions of millions of central government workers and retirees.

This response was regarding pensions

In reply to another inquiry about pensions, the government clarified that there will be no bias against pensioners based on when they retired. The Minister of State for Finance stated that the pensions for central government employees are governed by the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules 2021 and other relevant regulations. It was also mentioned that the Finance Act 2025 upholds the current pension rules and does not alter any civil or defense pensions.

New vacancies also released

Earlier in January, the government announced that the office for the 8th Pay Commission had been established. Furthermore, new vacancies have been issued for the appointment of staff within the Commission. These steps clearly indicate that the 8th Pay Commission is gradually becoming fully operational, and further updates regarding its functioning are expected in the future, which both central government employees and pensioners are closely monitoring.
