Driving License: Now You Can Drive a Scooter or Bike Even at 16, Government Brings New Rules

Permission to drive two-wheelers for 16-18 years old!

Due to the problem of driving by minors, the ministry has proposed to allow 16 to 18 years old to drive 50 cc motorcycles or electric scooters-motorcycles. However, they will be able to drive two-wheelers with a maximum power of 1500 watts.

This young generation will be able to drive two-wheelers with a maximum speed of 25 kmph. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is going to bring 67 proposed amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act in the winter session of Parliament. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed a significant amendment to the Motor Vehicles Act, under which motor accident claims tribunals will be given a 12-month time limit to dispose of cases. The amendment also proposes to recognise commercial use of motorcycles as contract carriage. This will allow motorcycles used for legitimate commercial purposes like Rapido and Uber.

Cab aggregators to be allowed to use bikes

This information has come to light in a report in the Times of India. Currently, all vehicles used for transport can be used as contract vehicles. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ proposal to amend the Motor Vehicles Act will help provide legal clarity on the use of motorcycles. The report says that many states had banned the use of motorcycles for ride-hailing services, for which the ministry is proposing this amendment. The ministry is going to amend the cab aggregator guidelines to include motorcycles, keeping in mind the safety of passengers.

Strictness to be increased on educational institution buses

The amendment being brought regarding the new definition of educational institution buses. In this, the amendment is being brought for those purchased or leased or hired by the institution for transporting more than six students, employees, excluding the driver. The proposal says that to increase the accountability of the institutions and drivers, the ministry has proposed to double the fine for violation of traffic rules in such buses.

Another proposed amendment will ask the states to process applications for cab aggregators, automated testing centers and recognized driver training centers within six months. If the states do not take action within this time frame, the central government guidelines will apply.
