NHAI Big Decision – Getting a FASTag for Cars Just Got Easier – Read Details

FASTag New Update: If you own a car and frequently travel on highways, this news brings you relief. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made a major change to the rules related to FASTags. From February 1, 2026, the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for obtaining a new FASTag for private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans has been eliminated. This change aims to make travel at toll plazas easier and faster.

No More Delays in Getting a FASTag

Until now, even after obtaining a FASTag, vehicle owners often had to resubmit documents or receive verification calls from the bank. This caused delays in tag activation and inconvenience for people. Under the new rules, this hassle will be eliminated. As soon as the FASTag is received from the bank, it will be ready for immediate use, and there will be no need to go through a separate KYV process.

Banks Will Be Responsible for Verification

Now, the entire responsibility for verifying vehicle-related information will rest with the banks. Banks will verify the vehicle information from the government’s VAHAN portal at the time of issuing the FASTag. This means that after receiving the tag, the customer will not need to provide any further documents or undergo any additional verification.

Relief for Existing FASTag Users

Those who already have a FASTag also need not worry. Unless a problem is found with the tag, they will not be asked for any additional checks or verification. Verification will only be required in cases where the FASTag is affixed to the wrong vehicle, a complaint has been received regarding the tag, the tag is not properly fitted, or it is being misused.

Why Did NHAI Take This Decision?

NHAI had been receiving complaints for a long time that, despite having valid documents, people were getting stuck in the FASTag process. In many cases, payments were also getting stuck, which increased problems at toll plazas. This new decision will reduce the time spent at toll plazas and make travel smoother. However, this exemption will only apply to private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. Commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks have not been given any relief under this rule.
