India Bullet Train: The most recent update has come in regarding the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. A tunnel (Mountain Tunnel-6) has been successfully broken through in the Palghar district of Maharashtra. This tunnel measures 454 meters in length and 14.4 meters in width, featuring bidirectional tracks (for both directions). This breakthrough is particularly noteworthy as it marks the second tunnel breakthrough in Palghar district within a month.
The first, Tunnel-5, was about 1.5 kilometers long and was completed on January 2nd near Safale. The excavation of the tunnel is now finished. The Advanced New Austrian Tunneling technology was employed, ensuring both speed and safety. This advancement will facilitate even quicker construction of the bullet train in Maharashtra.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Project represents India’s inaugural bullet train corridor, stretching a total of 508 km. Out of this, 156 km is located in Maharashtra while 352 km is in Gujarat. The project encompasses a total of 27.4 km of tunnels, which includes 21 km of underground tunnels and 6.4 km of surface tunnels.
Maharashtra is home to seven mountain tunnels, which collectively span approximately 6 km in length. This initiative will cut down the travel time from Mumbai to Ahmedabad to just 1 hour and 58 minutes, a significant reduction from the current several hours. Its completion is expected to enhance trade, tourism, and job opportunities between the two cities. Additionally, this transportation method is environmentally friendly, producing up to 95% less CO2 emissions compared to road travel.
As per the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the bullet train project is advancing swiftly. Over 334 km of viaducts have been completed to date. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has announced that the first phase of the bullet train will be finalized next year, with operations set to commence soon.
