Kavach 4.0: Awesome news for train travelers on the Mumbai–Vadodara route! Trains running from Virar to Surat are now going to be much safer. The Western Railway has introduced the cutting-edge “KAVACH 4.0” system in this area, which aims to prevent accidents due to train collisions, signal failures, or human mistakes. The Sayaji Express was officially launched.
Thanks to this new tech, passengers can feel more secure about their trips than ever before. The Mumbai Division of Western Railway has rolled out the “Kavach 4.0” system across the full 206-kilometer stretch from Virar to Surat. The Sayaji Express, Train No. 20907, was the first to showcase the Kavach system.
What exactly is the Kavach system?
Railway officials explain that Kavach is a homegrown technology designed in India to avert accidents from train collisions, signal breaches, and human errors. If the train driver makes a mistake, the system automatically engages the brakes to halt the train.
28 Stations and 28 Block Sections Covered
The Kavach system covers 28 stations and 28 block sections along the Virar-Surat route. Plus, S-Kavach equipment has been set up at 33 spots, all linked to the signaling system. A total of 64 RIU units have been installed at auto huts and operational centers. The Railways has also built a robust infrastructure for this initiative, which includes erecting 33 towers that are 40 meters high and laying down 412 kilometers of optical fiber cable across two routes to ensure seamless communication.
Officials noted that the project was completed swiftly, with loco trials finishing in May 2025 and an Independent Safety Audit (ISA) taking place in October 2025. After the report was released in January 2026, the PCSTE gave the green light, and the project was officially launched.
This Virar-Surat section is part of Western Railway’s larger mission, which is installing the Kavach system on the 344-kilometer route from Virar to Vadodara. The railway claims that this will make train operations on this entire route more safe, controlled, and reliable. Railway officials stated that the Kavach system is a major step forward for passenger safety and will significantly reduce the risk of train accidents.
