Vande Bharat 4.0: Indian Railways is on the brink of a major change. The cutting-edge Vande Bharat 4.0 trains are about to hit speeds of 350 km/h, placing India among the nations with the fastest rail networks globally. The Railway Ministry states that this advancement showcases India’s increasing dedication to next-gen high-speed rail travel. It’s specifically crafted for ‘dedicated high-speed corridors’ like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route.

The first semi-high-speed trainset made its debut in February 2019. Safety features got a boost in September 2022. Energy efficiency and passenger comforts were further enhanced in 2025. A sleeper version is set to roll out in 2026, designed for long-distance travel, including night runs. A fourth iteration will arrive in 2027, capable of reaching a top speed of 350 km/h. The goal is to have 4,500 Vande Bharat trains operating nationwide by 2047.

Vande Bharat 4.0 is not just about speed; it will also adhere to the highest safety standards. Kavach 5.0 is India’s homegrown “Automatic Train Protection” system. It prevents collisions, automatically applies brakes if a signal is ignored, and manages overspeeding.

This technology captures energy during braking, sending it back to the grid, leading to substantial energy savings. It features a semi-permanent coupler and enhanced suspension, ensuring a smooth ride for passengers even at high speeds.

Vande Bharat 4.0 will include a homegrown UV-C lamp-based disinfection system for air sterilization, fully sealed gangways, and centrally controlled automatic plug doors. It will also have specially designed toilets and seating arrangements, safety cameras in every coach, and an emergency unit for communication with the crew.
