Shreyas Iyer is on the verge to claim an all-time record in the One Day International format as an Indian cricketer. If he is able to continue his form, he can surpass batting maestro Virat Kohli as well in the India vs New Zealand 2nd ODI match, which is scheduled to play tomorrow, after winning the opening match of the ongoing ODI series.
Shreyas Iyer can be the fastest Indian to score 3,000 ODI runs
The second match of the ODI series between India and New Zealand will be played in Rajkot on January 14th. Having won the first ODI, Team India currently leads the series 1-0. Meanwhile, in the second ODI, Team India’s middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer will have a chance to create history. If Shreyas Iyer scores 34 runs in this match, he will become the fastest batsman to score 3,000 runs for India in ODIs. He will break Shikhar Dhawan’s record in this regard.
Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan holds the record for the fastest Indian to reach 3,000 ODI runs. Dhawan achieved this feat in 72 innings, while Virat Kohli reached 3,000 runs in 75. Now, Shreyas will have a chance to surpass both of these players. If Shreyas scores 34 runs in the upcoming match, he will reach 3,000 ODI runs in 69 innings, becoming the fastest Indian player to reach 3,000 ODI runs, based on innings.
Shreyas Iyer made his ODI debut for Team India in 2017. However, since then, he has been in and out of the team due to injuries. Recently, after recovering from injury, Shreyas returned to the cricket field during the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26.
Following his return, he scored 82 and 45 runs in two Vijay Hazare Trophy matches, while also scoring 49 runs off 47 balls in the first ODI against New Zealand while chasing a target of 301 runs. He will be aiming to maintain this record in the upcoming matches.
