In a revolutionary decision, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the abolition of the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for new vehicles. Starting February 1, 2026, you will be relieved of the hassle of repeated document verifications and bank visits when purchasing FASTags for new cars, jeeps, and vans.

FASTag KYV Update
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this improvement to the KYV system is a significant milestone for the convenience of the general public. Until now, highway users faced significant problems like verification failures or repeated notifications for weeks after activating their FASTag.

Starting February 1, 2026, when purchasing a FASTag for a new vehicle, you will no longer need to undergo separate KYC. The government has eliminated the root cause of this significant problem. Vehicle registration (RC) registration will now be pre-verified, saving customers from the complex paperwork.
Direct Verification from the Vahan Portal
NHAI has also issued strict regulations for banks. Banks issuing FASTags will now be required to perform pre-activation validation of vehicle information through the Vahan Portal database. This means that as soon as you apply for a FASTag, the bank will automatically perform a seamless verification of your vehicle’s details against government data.

Checks Only Upon Complaint
The authority has clarified that the KYV process has not been eliminated, but rather, it has been made need-based for special circumstances. No documents will be re-requested for FASTags that are functioning normally. Documents will now be requested only if a FASTag complaint is received, a tag has been incorrectly issued, or a vehicle owner reports a lost tag. This will completely relieve old and regular users of the hassle of repeatedly updating their FASTags.
