What is the Old Age Pension Scheme?

The Old Age Pension Scheme is a social security scheme run by the Uttar Pradesh government, aimed at providing a regular income to economically weaker elderly people. Under this scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive Rs. 1000 every month directly into their bank accounts, so that they can easily meet their daily expenses.

How the new system has changed the entire process

Earlier, the application, verification, and approval process for this scheme was quite complex, due to which many elderly people were deprived of the scheme’s benefits. Now, the government has linked the Family ID system to this scheme. Citizens who have a Family ID will be automatically included in the pension list as soon as they turn 60 years old.

Who is eligible for this scheme?

Only individuals who are 60 years of age or older and are permanent residents of Uttar Pradesh can avail the benefits of this scheme. The beneficiary must be below the poverty line. The annual income of elderly people living in rural areas should not exceed Rs. 46,080, while in urban areas this limit is set at Rs. 56,460.

When will the pension benefit not be available?

If a person’s income exceeds the prescribed limit, they will not be given an old-age pension. Elderly people who are already receiving benefits from any other government pension scheme will also not be considered eligible. In addition, if the age recorded in the Aadhaar card or other documents is less than 60 years, the pension will not be approved.

Why is a Family ID necessary?

Obtaining a Family ID has been made mandatory to avail the benefits of the old-age pension. The Social Welfare Department identifies and verifies beneficiaries only through the Family ID. According to the new rules, a person’s name will be added to the potential pension list approximately 90 days before they turn 60 years old.
