SRK Birthday Special – Today, November 2nd, our beloved King Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, is celebrating his 60th birthday! In a career spanning over three decades, he has captivated not only India but the entire world with his acting. But do you know where our “King of Romance” has his roots? The answer is: Peshawar, Pakistan! Let’s take a closer look at his unique “Peshawari connection.”
Peshawar’s Streets and Khan Sahib’s Ancestral Home
Shah Rukh Khan’s father, Mir Taj Mohammad Khan, was born in the culturally rich city of Peshawar. Renowned film journalist Anupama Chopra’s biography, “King of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan,” contains an interesting insight.
According to Anupama Chopra’s book, Shah Rukh’s family lived in house number 1147, a narrow alley in Shahwali Qatal, Peshawar. This area was within walking distance of Dhakai Naal Bandi and Duma Gali.
And interestingly, Dhaka Naal Bandi and Duma Gali were the areas where two other legends of Indian cinema, Prithviraj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar, also lived. There’s truly something magical about Peshawar’s soil!
The Freedom Struggle and the Journey to Delhi
Shahrukh Khan’s father, Mir Taj Mohammad Khan, was born in 1928 in the same house number 1147. He was only 14 years old when, during the 1942 Quit India Movement, he and his brother Gama were arrested along with 60,000 others for their political activism. The political turmoil in Peshawar disrupted his studies. Therefore, Mir Taj Mohammad’s family sent him to Delhi in 1946. It was there that he met Fatima from Hyderabad a few years later and they got married.
Finally, on November 2, 1965, at Talwar Nursing Home in Delhi, the star we all know today as Shah Rukh Khan was born!
