RBI 2000 Rupee Note Update: The Reserve Bank of India has once again shared new information regarding the 2000 rupee note. According to the central bank’s latest data, as of October 31, 2025, approximately ₹5,817 crore worth of 2000 rupee notes are still in circulation. This represents approximately 1.63 percent of the total currency issued.
It should be noted that when the withdrawal of 2000 rupee notes was announced on May 19, 2023, 98.37 percent of the ₹3.56 lakh crore worth of notes in circulation had been returned. Despite this, the story of the pink notes is not completely over, as they remain valid as legal tender.

Why 2000 Rupee Notes Were Discontinued
On May 19, 2023, the RBI announced that 2000 rupee notes would be withdrawn from circulation. This decision was intended to simplify the monetary system and control cash misuse. However, this move was not demonetization. The RBI clarified that 2000 rupee notes are still valid and will remain valid for their full value.
RBI Launches This Facility
Those who still possess 2000 rupee notes can easily exchange them or deposit them into their bank accounts. This facility has been available at 19 RBI issue offices since May 19, 2023. Additionally, from October 9, 2023, the RBI also introduced a facility allowing individuals and organizations to send their 2000 rupee notes directly to RBI issue offices for deposit into their accounts.

Exchange notes at the post office
If someone cannot reach an RBI office, they can send their 2000 rupee notes to the RBI from any post office in the country via India Post. Once the RBI receives the notes, the amount is deposited into the bank account of the individual concerned.
This facility has proven to be very helpful for those who live away from major cities or who do not have a nearby RBI office.
Learn where to exchange notes
