A new course will replace B.Ed. – ITEP
According to the new education policy, a new course called ITEP (Integrated Teacher Education Programme) is being introduced to prepare teachers. This is a four-year integrated program in which students complete both graduation and teacher training simultaneously. Candidates completing this course are directly eligible for PRT (Primary Teacher), TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher), and PGT (Post Graduate Teacher) positions.
The primary objective of ITEP is to prepare teachers who can teach by understanding not just the subject but also the behaviour, thoughts, and emotions of children. This course has already been introduced in many leading universities across the country and will be fully implemented in place of B.Ed. in the coming years.
What are the rules for TGT and PGT recruitment?
- A relief for B.Ed.Holders are informed that there have been no changes to the rules for TGT and PGT positions.
- For the TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher) position, a candidate must have a B.Ed. Degree along with graduation.
- For the PGT (Post Graduate Teacher), a B.Ed degree along with post-graduation (Master’s) is mandatory.
- This means that the doors to TGT and PGT positions are still open for B.Ed holders, but the path to the PRT position is now closed.
Eligibility for Admission to the ITEP Course
To be admitted to the ITEP, a candidate must have passed Class 12 from a recognised board with at least 50% marks. This course is available to students from all three streams: Arts, Science, and Commerce. The duration of the ITEP is four years, during which students are also provided with practical training at the school level.
ITEP Course Fees and Benefits
The ITEP course fee varies depending on the university. The fees in government colleges range from approximately ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 per year, while in private universities, they can range from ₹80,000 to ₹1.5 lakh per year.
The biggest advantage of this course is that students complete both graduation and teacher training simultaneously. This saves both time and money. Additionally, students receive in-depth training in child psychology, modern educational techniques, and value education.
Why the Supreme Court’s decision is important
The Supreme Court stated in its decision that B.Ed. Holders are not trained to teach young children, while understanding the mental and emotional development of children is crucial in primary education. Therefore, only candidates holding an ITEP or D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) will be eligible for the PRT position.
