Cyclone Montha Update – Cyclone Montha is now becoming severe, due to which a red alert has been issued in many areas. In view of the threat of Cyclone Montha, people are being evacuated to safer locations. Furthermore, people have been advised to stay away from coastal areas.

The cyclone originating in the Bay of Bengal is expected to have the greatest impact in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected in coastal and interior areas in the coming days.

Cyclone Montha is also expected to make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near the Kakinada coast of Andhra Pradesh, on the night of October 28th. Winds of 90 to 110 kilometres per hour are expected in many areas.

Heavy rain and wind warning in Andhra Pradesh

According to the Meteorological Department, Andhra Pradesh is likely to be most affected by the cyclone. According to the IMD, a heavy rainfall warning has been issued for most of the coastal districts of the state. Strong winds of 90 to 110 kilometres per hour are expected here.

According to Hyderabad Meteorological Department official G.N.R.S. Srinivasa Rao, Cyclone Montha is expected to hit the Andhra Pradesh coast by Tuesday evening or night. The IMD has also issued an orange alert for Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, and Mulugu districts. The northeastern districts have also been put on a yellow alert.

According to the Meteorological Department, a warning has been issued for waves of approximately 4.7 meters high along the Andhra Pradesh coast from Nellore to Srikakulam. There is also a risk of flooding in low-lying areas after the storm makes landfall. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to evacuate people from vulnerable coastal areas and take them to relief centres.

Rain Alert in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra

In view of the potential devastation caused by the cyclone, the government has deployed over 128 rescue teams, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the ODRAF, and the Fire Service. The administration is focusing on hilly areas prone to landslides to respond promptly to any emergencies.

The IMD has also predicted continued bad weather in Tamil Nadu. A Monday alert has been issued for northern districts such as Chennai, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, and Kanchipuram. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, Cyclone Montha is expected to move in a north-northwesterly direction.

According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rains are possible in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, as well as Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for some areas of Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, and Goa. According to IMD, after the outer band of Cyclone Montha reaches the ground, there may be moderate to heavy rainfall in the interior areas of these states.
