New Delhi: India’s financial capital, Mumbai, is grappling with heavy rains even in October, making life difficult for residents. Normally, Mumbai’s weather clears up in October, bringing relief from the rains, but that hasn’t happened this time. The city is currently grappling with heavy rain.
Even after the official withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, the city is expected to experience thunderstorms and heavy rain. Consequently, everyone wants to know the reason behind this unusual weather. IMD scientist B. Nita Sasidharan has thoroughly explained the cause of this unusual weather. The IMD believes that the current rainfall in Mumbai and its surrounding areas is linked to a depression in the east-central Arabian Sea, which has pushed moisture toward the west coast.
The Impact of Post-Monsoon Activity
Scientists believe that the heavy rainfall in Mumbai is due to the post-monsoon system, which often becomes active several times after the monsoon’s withdrawal. Nita Sasidharan informed that there is no unified weather system this time. Rather, independent activities are also underway.
According to scientists, there is a difference between monsoon rains and post-monsoon rains. While it rains continuously during the monsoon season, the rains during this time are seen as intense showers.
This is because the city has been experiencing a period of heavy rain and lightning for the past few days. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai for these days. During this period, heavy rain, lightning, and winds of up to 60 kilometres per hour are expected in the city.
Caution is advised amid the possibility of thunderstorms
The Meteorological Department has appealed to citizens to exercise caution in view of the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds. Such rains are likely to impact road traffic and local train speeds.
Scientists also explained that the announcement of the monsoon’s withdrawal depends not only on rainfall but also on several other factors. Cessation of rainfall activity in the region, establishment of an anticyclone in the lower troposphere and a decrease in moisture have been reported.
