Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), the country’s most modern and smart airport, on Wednesday, October 8, 2025. Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani was also present on the occasion. This airport will decongest Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and inject new energy into India’s aviation industry.
PM Narendra Modi inaugurated new airport
PM Modi addressed a public gathering after inaugurating the Navi Mumbai International Airport. He said that Mumbai now has a new airport (NMIA), which will be Asia’s largest connectivity hub. Today, the city also has a fully underground metro system for easy travel. The PM further stated that the launch of the underground metro system, with such meticulous construction, in a city like Mumbai is a major achievement.
What is the need of another airport?
PM Modi noted that at present India is the youngest country in the world. Our strength lies in our youth, so every policy is focused on providing maximum employment opportunities for them. NMIA, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, is inspired by the lotus flower. It is India’s first fully DigiYatra-enabled digital airport. AI, face recognition, and automation systems will ensure a completely paperless and seamless journey.
NMIA is considered India’s green airport model. Its 47 MW solar power, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and electric buses demonstrate its commitment to the environment.
connectivity and passenger amenities:
The airport will be connected by expressway, metro, suburban rail and water taxi – the first of its kind in India. In the first phase, its capacity will be 2 crore passengers per year, while in future it will have the capacity to handle 9 crore passengers and 32.5 lakh metric tonnes of cargo. There will be futuristic facilities like 66 check-in counters, 22 self bag drop machines and Automated People Mover (APM).
