Ration Update: Good news for poor people. The Tamil Nadu government announced on Saturday that it will deliver essential goods directly to the homes of senior citizens and disabled family cardholders under the Public Distribution System on October 5th and 6th, ahead of the Diwali festival on October 20th. This means that senior citizens and disabled family cardholders in the state will no longer need to stand in long lines.

This doorstep delivery will be implemented under the “Thaiyumanavar” scheme, launched by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in August. An official government release states that the distribution will be conducted simultaneously across the state. Senior citizens over the age of 70 and ration cardholders from families with disabilities will be relieved of the hassle of waiting in queues at their neighborhood fair price shops to receive their monthly rations.

How will rations be delivered door-to-door?

It states that vehicles will pick up essential commodities from FP shops and deliver them directly to beneficiaries’ homes, and PDS workers will use electronic scales and e-POS machines for accurate and transparent distribution. A total of 2.17 million cardholders across Tamil Nadu will benefit from this initiative.

FP shops have been instructed to display this information on their notice boards. The government has urged elderly and disabled members of the public to take advantage of this doorstep delivery scheme.
