UIDAI Plans to Expand Aadhaar Usage
UIDAI plans to increase Aadhaar authentication further. Currently, about 90 million Aadhaar authentications happen daily. The goal is to raise this number to 200 million. Aadhaar will also be used for more purposes, like buying railway tickets. Special camps will be held in schools to update children’s biometrics.
Steps to Prevent Misuse
UIDAI is deactivating Aadhaar cards of deceased people to prevent misuse. So far, over 12 million deceased Aadhaar cards have been deactivated. This will help stop misuse of government benefits or subsidies.
Currently, more than 1.42 crore Aadhaar cards have been issued in India. UIDAI has clarified that Aadhaar is not proof of citizenship, as stated in Section 9 of the Aadhaar Act.
Companies must store Aadhaar data only in India. UIDAI says there has been no Aadhaar data leak so far, and its data protection rules are stricter than other laws.
