Biography of Dr. Radhakrishnan
Let us tell you that Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888 in Tiruttani, Tamil Nadu. He made education his life goal from the very beginning. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s life has been as a teacher and scholar; his deep knowledge of philosophy earned him recognition not only in the country but also abroad. He taught in prestigious institutions like Madras Presidency College, Mysore University and Calcutta University. Later, he was also associated with the Vice Chancellor of Andhra University and later with Delhi University and Banaras Hindu University.
Why did the tradition of celebrating Teacher’s Day start?
Actually, Dr. Radhakrishnan was very popular among his students in the country. When he became the President of India, some students and teachers talked about celebrating his birthday specially. On this, he said that the biggest honour for me would be that my birthday is celebrated as Teacher’s Day. Due to this, after this wish of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the tradition of celebrating Teacher’s Day on 5 September started in the whole country in 1962.
So Dr. Radhakrishnan believed that education is not limited to bookish knowledge only. He believed that education also strengthens the character building, moral values and social responsibility of a person. Dr. Radhakrishnan has been given many big honours in view of his scholarship and contributions. In the year 1954, he was awarded Bharat Ratna, which is the highest civilian honour of the country.
