You must be aware that the craze for compact and stylish SUVs is increasing rapidly in the Indian car market. Hatchback buyers are also now leaning towards cars with SUV-like looks and a slightly bigger stance. Keeping this demand in mind, companies are constantly strengthening their micro SUV lineup.
The two most popular vehicles in this segment are Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch. Although both are strong contenders in their own places, the question is who is the real champion among these two. Let’s find out their performance test and real-world numbers.

Engine
At the same time, both SUVs have a 1.2-litre NA petrol engine. The engine of Tata Punch gives 86PS power and 113Nm torque, while the engine of Hyundai Exter generates 83PS power and 114Nm torque. That is, there is a slight difference in the figures.

If we talk about transmission, then both the vehicles have 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options. The only difference is that Exter also gives paddle shifters in its AMT variant, which makes it feel a bit sporty. Both are neck-to-neck in fuel efficiency as well. The manual mileage of Punch is 20.09kmpl and that of AMT is 18.8kmpl. At the same time, Exter gives 19.4kmpl in manual and 19.2kmpl in AMT.
Performance
Both models with manual transmission were tested. Hyundai Exter won the 0-100 kmph race. Exter reached this speed in just 13.54 seconds, while Tata Punch took 16.81 seconds. Exter also left Punch behind in the quarter mile test. Exter reached a speed of 118.27 kmph in 18.92 seconds, while Punch could reach 110.51 kmph in just 20.48 seconds.
However, Punch had the upper hand in the roll-on test. Punch took just 10.09 seconds in 30-80 kmph (3rd gear), while Exter took 12.05 seconds. Similarly, Punch left Exter behind by a slight margin in 40-100 kmph (4th gear). Exter again showed its strong grip in terms of braking. In the 100-0 kmph test, the Exter stopped in just 40.02 metres, while the Punch took 43.21 metres.

Price
Along with performance, price is also a big importance for buyers. Hyundai Exter is priced between Rs 6.12 lakh to Rs 10.42 lakh (ex-showroom). On the other hand, Tata Punch is slightly cheaper and its price ranges from Rs 5.99 lakh to Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom).

However, both the SUVs come in almost the same price bracket and as alternatives, they can be compared with hatchbacks like Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, Maruti Suzuki Ignis and sub-4m SUVs like Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger.
