The Government of India started the Soil Health Card Scheme on 19 February 2015. It is under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The scheme gives farmers a report about their soil. This helps them choose the right crop. It also helps them use fertilizer the right way. It keeps the land healthy.
The slogan is “Swasth Dharaa, Khet Haraa”. It means “Healthy Earth, Green Field.” So far, more than 25 crore cards have been given to farmers for free. Every farmer gets a card every two to three years. The card shows a full report of their soil. The report shows 12 things: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, zinc, iron, copper, manganese, boron, pH, electrical conductivity, and organic carbon. The farmer can see what is missing in the soil. They can also see which crops are best. It tells how much fertilizer to use. The report also gives advice to improve the soil. For example, farmers may add lime or gypsum.
How the Soil Health Card is Made
The card is made using a scientific process. Soil samples are taken from 15 to 20 cm deep in the field. Samples are collected from an area of 2 to 2.5 hectares depending on the field. The samples are then tested in state government soil labs, agricultural universities, or private labs. After testing, farmers get a printed card. They can also download the information from the portal soilhealth.dac.gov.in.
Benefits for Farmers
- This scheme gives many benefits to farmers:
- Farmers can choose the right crop by knowing the soil condition, which increases yield.
- Using fertilizers as suggested on the card reduces cost and protects the land and water from chemicals.
- Soil stays healthy because farmers can add organic manure, lime, or other soil improvers.
- Farmers’ income increases due to better yield and lower cost.
- The scheme also helps rural youth start soil testing labs. The government supports up to 75% of the cost. This also creates jobs in villages.
