In the electric car world, speed is often seen as a challenge, but BYD has proved otherwise. With its Yangwang U9 Track Edition, the Chinese brand has shown that innovation and performance can go hand in hand, creating a new milestone in automotive history.
New World Record Speed
BYD Yangwang U9 Track Edition has officially become the fastest electric car in the world. The hypercar touched a top speed of 472.41 kmph, breaking the previous record set by Rimac Nevera R at 431.45 kmph. This record was created at Germany’s Automotive Testing Papenburg (ATP) track, the same place where Rimac had set its benchmark just a few months ago.
Track Edition vs Standard Version
The record-breaking car is the Track Edition of Yangwang U9. The standard version had earlier clocked a top speed of 391.94 kmph in November 2024. This means the Track Edition gained almost 80 kmph more, highlighting major aerodynamic changes and advanced engineering.
Power and Performance
The Yangwang U9 Track Edition is powered by four electric motors. Each motor generates 555 kW (755 PS), resulting in a combined output of 2,207 kW (3,000 PS). With a power-to-weight ratio of 1,200 PS per ton, the car delivers extraordinary acceleration and unmatched road presence. German racing driver Marc Basseng was behind the wheel during this record run.
Ahead of Rimac Nevera R
Compared to Rimac Nevera R, which has 1,571 kW (2,017 PS) and a power-to-weight ratio of 978 PS per ton, the Yangwang U9 Track Edition leads in both power and speed. This achievement shows BYD’s growing dominance in the hypercar segment.
Advanced Technology and Hardware
The car is based on BYD’s e4 platform and features the DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System. This system continuously adjusts suspension, damping, and ride height to ensure stability even at extreme speeds and during sharp cornering. It also uses advanced torque vectoring for precise power distribution across all four motors.
Unique Design Choices
One of the surprising aspects of this hypercar is the absence of a rear wing. Instead, BYD partnered with Singapore’s Giti Tire to develop special semi-slick track tires. These tires are made from a unique compound with a special tread pattern, offering maximum grip without requiring extra aerodynamic aids.
