What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar scheme on 15 February 2024. It was named PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana or PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme. Under this, common citizens can get solar panels installed on their roofs. The government gives a subsidy of up to Rs 78 thousand to make its cost easy. In some states like Delhi, the benefit of an additional subsidy can also be availed. The target of the scheme is to connect one crore families with solar energy by 2027.

Objectives of the scheme

This scheme aims to make India self-reliant in the field of energy and reduce dependence on foreign countries. By installing solar panels on the roof, the cost of electricity will be almost zero, and by generating more electricity than required, you can also earn money by selling it to the grid. Also, environmental pollution will be reduced due to clean energy.

What are its benefits

Under the scheme, the government transfers the subsidy directly to the bank account. Once the panel is installed, electricity becomes almost free for 20 to 25 years. People living in both rural and urban areas can take advantage of this. Not only this, but the problem of frequent power cuts will also be eliminated to a great extent.

How much subsidy is available

On installing 1 to 2 kW solar panels, a subsidy of Rs 30,000 per kW is available. That is, a total relief of Rs 60,000 on a 2 kW system. If the consumption is 150 to 300 units, then a subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 can be availed. Whereas for capacity of more than 3 kW, the maximum subsidy is fixed at Rs 78,000.

Group Housing Society or RWA is also given a subsidy of Rs 18,000 per kW.

Eligibility and required documents

Only Indian citizens who have a valid electricity connection and space available to install the panel on the roof can take advantage of this scheme. Residents of houses or flats, small traders, and rural and urban families are all eligible for this. Identity card, residence certificate, electricity bill, and proof of ownership of the roof are mandatory documents.
