After retiring from Test cricket, the ODI careers of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are also in doubt. Both are still playing ODI cricket. They are expected to play in the three-match ODI series between India and Australia in October this year. However, Kohli and Rohit may also be asked to play for India A to get match practice. They retired from Test cricket in May this year.
The ODI series between India and Australia will start in Perth on October 19. Before this series, the main topic is whether Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be selected in the team.
On Sunday, two types of news came out. The first was that both players might retire from the 50-over format after the Australia series. A few hours later, news from PTI said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India does not want to take a quick decision about these two great players.
Kohli and Rohit May Play for India A Before Australia Series
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma may be asked to play for India A against Australia A to prepare for the ODI matches. According to reports, a section in the BCCI believes Kohli and Rohit should play some matches for India A before the Australia series. Australia A’s team, which includes Jake Fraser-McGurk, will tour India. The three List A matches will be played on 30 September, 3 October, and 5 October. At the same time, Test matches will be played between India and West Indies.
Kohli and Rohit’s Recent Performances and Domestic Matches
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have scored more than 10,000 runs each in ODIs. They played their last ODI was on 9 March 2025 in Dubai. It was the final of the Champions Trophy 2025, where India beat New Zealand to win the trophy. Rohit scored 76 runs in 83 balls and won the Player of the Match award. Kohli scored 84 runs in 98 balls against Australia in the semi-finals and also made a century against Pakistan in the group match.
Earlier, the BCCI made Kohli and Rohit play Ranji matches. After India’s poor tour of Australia, the board set rules that players must play domestic matches if no international games are happening in India. Only then could they be selected for the Test team. Both Kohli and Rohit played Ranji matches but retired from Test cricket before the next series.
