Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket. Now, their ODI careers are also in danger. They still play ODI matches. They will likely play the three-match ODI series between India and Australia in October. But they may also play for India A to practice.
The India vs Australia ODI series starts in Perth on October 19. Before the series, people talk a lot about whether Kohli and Rohit will be in the team. On Sunday, two news stories came out. First, both players may retire from ODI cricket after the Australia series. Later, PTI said the Board of Control for Cricket in India does not want to make a quick decision about these two players.
Kohli and Rohit May Play for India A
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma may play for India A against Australia A to prepare for the ODI matches. A section in the BCCI thinks Kohli and Rohit should play some matches for India A before the Australia series. Australia A’s team will have Jake Fraser-McGurk. This team will tour India and play three List A matches on 30 September, 3 October, and 5 October. At the same time, India and West Indies will play Test matches.

Kohli and Rohit’s Records and Ranji Matches
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have more than 10,000 runs in ODIs. They played their last ODI on 9 March 2025 in Dubai. It was the final of the Champions Trophy 2025. India beat New Zealand and won the trophy. Rohit scored 76 runs in 83 balls and won the Player of the Match. Kohli scored 84 runs in 98 balls against Australia in the semi-final. He also scored a century against Pakistan in the group match.
The board asked Kohli and Rohit to play Ranji matches. After India lost badly in Australia, BCCI made a rule. If players are in India and no international series is going on, they must play domestic matches. Only then will they get a chance in the Test team. Both Kohli and Rohit played Ranji matches but retired from this format before the next Test series.
