The Indian ODI captain Rohit Sharma is always in the headlines. The Hitman, who recently retired from Test cricket, has already left T20 Internationals. Now, he will play only in the ODI format and continues to lead the team. Fans believe he might remain captain until the ODI World Cup 2027, and their hopes have grown after a poster released by the ICC.
Indian Team to Tour England in 2026
In 2026, the Indian team will tour England for a limited-overs series. During this tour, the two teams will play 5 T20 matches and 3 ODI matches. The ICC has released a poster for the series, featuring England captain Harry Brook and India’s current ODI captain Rohit Sharma.
This picture has made fans wonder — if Rohit is leading the team in 2026, could he remain the ODI captain until the 2027 World Cup?
Rohit’s Focus on ODIs
After winning the T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit Sharma retired from T20 Internationals. Now, his full focus is on ODIs. India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir recently said it is too early to plan for 2027. Before the England series, Gambhir explained, “Before that, the T20 World Cup is still there. It is a big tournament to be held in India in February-March. So, our full focus is there right now. After the England series, the focus will shift to the T20 World Cup. There are still two and a half years left for the ODI World Cup in November-December 2027.” Gambhir added, “If you keep performing well, age is just a number.”
India currently has three captains in three formats — Suryakumar Yadav leads T20 Internationals, Shubman Gill leads the Test team after Rohit’s retirement, and Rohit Sharma remains the ODI captain. Under Gill’s captaincy, the Indian Test team recently drew a 5-match series in England 2-2.
