A big update has come regarding the Aadhaar card. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated 1 crore 17 lakh Aadhaar cards.
Last month, a new service was started on the My Aadhaar portal. This service allows people to give information about the death of a family member. By using this service, you can update the Aadhaar data of a family member who has passed away. UIDAI is a government body that issues Aadhaar cards to people living in India. It also decides what changes can be made in Aadhaar.
To keep the Aadhaar data correct and safe, UIDAI has deactivated the Aadhaar numbers of around 1.17 crore dead persons. These Aadhaar numbers are now closed and cannot be used anymore.
UIDAI Asked for Death Records
According to the Ministry of Electronics and IT, UIDAI recently requested the Registrar General of India to share death records linked with Aadhaar numbers. As of July 16, about 1.55 crore death records have been received from 24 states and union territories. After checking these records, around 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers have been deactivated.
Whose Aadhaar Card Was Deactivated
Under the service called ‘Reporting of Death of a Family Member’, you can request to deactivate the Aadhaar card of a family member who has died. For this, you need to:
- Show proof of your relationship with the deceased
- Enter the Aadhaar number of the deceased
- Provide the death registration number and other required details
- Once you submit this information on the portal, UIDAI will verify it. After proper verification, the Aadhaar card of the deceased will be deactivated.
- Under a pilot project, UIDAI is also sharing the details of people aged 100 years or more with state governments to confirm whether they are still alive or not.
