India’s leading carmaker Maruti Suzuki no longer only focuses on cars. The automaker is now set to enter future mobility technologies such as drones, electric vehicles, and others. In a daring decision passed by the board on July 31, 2025, Maruti is setting its sights beyond the automobile space and trying to dominate new-age transport innovation.
Maruti to Enter Drone and EV Manufacturing
Maruti Suzuki India Limited, a veteran market leader in the passenger vehicle space, has come out with a large-scale expansion plan. The company has suggested amending its Memorandum of Association (MoA) to enable it to go beyond automobiles. The board-approved proposal will be tabled before shareholders at the forthcoming AGM on August 28, 2025.
Under this shift, Maruti will start developing advanced technology such as drones, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The company will also work on propulsion and control systems — central elements of future mobility solutions.
A Broader Mobility Vision
Maruti is also gearing up to venture into new service segments such as vehicle leasing, subscription schemes, and shared mobility. The company is also looking at businesses including electric vehicle charging points, hydrogen and biogas fuel business, and vehicle recycling. Services such as carbon credit trading, logistics, R&D, supply chain management, and vehicle testing are also in the pipeline. These initiatives demonstrate Maruti’s strong emphasis on sustainability and next-gen mobility solutions.
Maruti’s First Electric SUV e-Vitara Launch in September
With these advancements, Maruti is also entering the EV segment with its maiden electric SUV. Maruti has announced the launch of the e-Vitara on September 3, 2025. The electric SUV promises to offer a range of about 500 km from a single charge and will be backed by a 10-year warranty. The e-Vitara will rival models such as the Hyundai Creta EV, MG ZS EV, and MG Windsor in the Indian and European markets.
