BYD Electric Car: In a nation where electric cars are witnessing rapid expansion, one international brand is working under a peculiar arrangement. A big Chinese organization is managing its entire business in India without its senior executives even visiting the nation. This is what is taking place behind the scenes.
How BYD is Running from Afar in India
BYD (Build Your Dreams), a Chinese electric vehicle company, has made a name for itself around the world and picked up pace rapidly in India’s electric automobile market. However, despite being here, BYD operates all its major functions from back home. Officials of the company are prohibited from visiting India owing to continuous geopolitical tension between India and China since 2020.
Reports indicate that all strategic decisions are being made from China and Japan. Even critical board meetings are taking place outside India — in such cities as Colombo, Kathmandu, and Singapore — simply so senior executives can attend.
Visa Barriers for BYD Executives
Like most Chinese companies, BYD is having trouble obtaining visas and work permits for its senior management. As Bloomberg reports, even BYD India Managing Director Ketsu Zhang was not able to renew his work permit. Having left the Chennai office, he started working from BYD’s headquarters in Shenzhen and has now moved to Japan. He still operates all company business from there.
Remote Control Creating Big Challenges
This far-from-the-boots-on-the-ground arrangement has made it more challenging for BYD to operate smoothly in India. Automaking involves on-ground decision-making, speedy action, and close association with local suppliers and teams. Being without the boots on the ground has resulted in delay and disruption. Still, BYD is attempting to expand its business in India.
