Women in Delhi will soon be able to travel in buses for free using a new digital pass. The government has introduced the Saheli Smart Card to make bus travel safer, easier, and paperless. This new system will replace the old pink paper tickets. The plan is expected to roll out by August 15, bringing a fresh and transparent way of travel for women and transgender people in the city.
What is Saheli Smart Card?
Saheli Smart Card is a digital travel card with the user’s name and photo. It will work under the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) system. With this card, women and transgender people aged 12 years and above can travel free in Delhi’s DTC and Cluster buses. The new card aims to make travel simpler and remove the hassle of paper tickets.
Who Can Get This Card?
Only Delhi residents who are at least 12 years old are eligible for the card. This includes both women and transgender individuals. The user must complete registration and KYC to get the card. The card will be delivered to their home address by the selected bank after verification.
Documents Required
To apply, applicants need to provide an Aadhaar card, PAN card, Delhi residence proof, passport-size photo, and other KYC documents as asked by the bank. The government wants this process to remain fully digital and corruption-free. That’s why DTC itself is not issuing any cards directly.
How to Apply
People must first register online on the DTC website. After that, they will choose a bank and visit the nearest branch to complete the KYC process. Once all steps are done, the bank will issue the card and send it to the user’s address.
Benefits of Saheli Smart Card
The biggest benefit is free travel in DTC and Cluster buses. The card can also be used for other transport by topping it up with money. Before using the card, it must be activated through DTC’s AFCS system. If the card is lost, users can report it at the bank and request a new one. A small fee may be charged for issuing or maintaining the card.
