EV vs CNG in 2025 : With the steep rise in fuel prices and greener alternatives getting more and more consideration in vehicles, many Indian buyers in 2025 will be considering CNG or electric (EV) cars. Both CNG and EVs are comparatively cheaper than petrol or diesel and are quite smart purchases for anyone looking to save some bills. But which one out of the two is better: CNG or working with an EV? Let’s clear that out.
In the first base consideration, we are looking at running costs. In pure terms, electric cars have an edge-as in what kind of costs for driving per kilome-tre. The charges for home charging of an EV are around ₹1 to ₹1.5 per km, depending on your electricity tariff slab. At the same time, CNG cars now cost about Rs. 2.5 to 3 for running 1 km according to CNG price and average mileage. Either way, if you drive long distances every day, the more money you save on fuel would be by using an EV.
Let us now consider the initial costs. CNG cars are comparatively cheaper than EVs. For example, a CNG variant of a small hatch like Maruti Wagon R or Hyundai Aura will cost around ₹7.5 to ₹9 lakh, whereas a small electric car like Tata Tiago EV or MG Comet EV will cost around ₹8.5 to ₹10.5 lakh. Thus, while EVs may have a heavier initial cost, the long-term savings on fuel and maintenance inescapably reduce the actual prices.

In maintenance as well, EVs have the advantage. There are fewer total parts in an electric vehicle-an engine oil, no clutch, and lesser in tools and gizmos that can break down. Just like with a gasoline vehicle, a CNG vehicle requires servicing, filter checks, and an amount of attention from the mechanic at periodic intervals. It is safe to say that the slow-running EV owner spends relatively less on repairs and servicing than the rest.
Now, fuel availability is another parameter. Limited availability of CNG stations is a case in many cities and small towns sometimes. EV charging points are rising at a staggering pace. Besides, most people charge their vehicles at home or work: if the area is electricity-deficient or does not have enough EV charging points, then CNG cars will probably be a more convenient option.

If your intention is fully to save on running costs, living in an area with decent charging facilities, then for 2025, EVs work out to be the best option. The maintenance will also be less, and it will cost less with running. But if you want a comparatively lower starting price, with CNG gas stations around, then CNG cars are still a wise budget-friendly choice. It all comes down to usage, regions, and how much you will hold the vehicle for.
