Hyundai Creta: Hyundai and Kia are preparing to revolutionize the SUV segment once again. In the coming year or so, these companies will introduce new-generation models of their popular midsize SUVs, Creta and Seltos, for the first time with hybrid power. From fresh new designs to sophisticated engines, these new SUVs might revolutionize the game for Indian consumers.

Hyundai Creta Hybrid Update

Hyundai will introduce the third-generation Creta by early 2027 as its first model to receive hybrid technology. In addition to the traditional petrol and diesel engines, the Creta will also have a hybrid variant based on its naturally aspirated 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine. The step is primarily due to more stringent CAFE 3 emission regulations.

The hybrid Creta will not only come with better fuel efficiency but will also be targeted towards export markets other than India. This hybrid configuration will enable Creta to face competition from the likes of the Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Renault Duster Hybrid, and the forthcoming Nissan Hybrid SUV.

Kia Seltos Hybrid Update

Kia is not staying behind either. At its 2025 Investor Day, Kia confirmed a new-generation Seltos hybrid will arrive at least six months ahead of the Creta hybrid, targeting a mid-2026 launch. It will share the same 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain as the Creta hybrid. Spy images have already shown prototypes testing on Indian roads, revealing new design details.

Expected Engines and Powertrain

The new Seltos will still provide the current naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, and 1.5-litre diesel engines, providing buyers with more choices aside from the hybrid. Hyundai and Kia are placing their bets heavily on hybrids to satisfy fuel efficiency needs without jumping fully into electric vehicles.

Hybrid upgrades changes

These hybrid upgrades will enable Hyundai and Kia to continue their dominance in the midsize SUV market. As fuel prices increase and emission standards become more stringent, Indian consumers increasingly seek solutions that optimize performance, fuel efficiency, and design. Hybrids may be just the right middle ground.
