Renault is gearing up for a major return in the Indian SUV segment with not one but two high-end models. Without revealing too much, a major change in the way these cars operate awaits—blending fuel and electrified options to suit all kinds of buyers, right from the frugal-minded to the tech-obsessed.
Renault is ready for new Duster
Renault is getting ready to bring the completely new Duster and Bigster to India with a broad array of engine options. Both models will first arrive with regular petrol engines for customers who prioritize affordability. But that’s not the end of it—after one year of production, hybrid versions will be offered, boasting enhanced fuel efficiency and green capabilities.
This strategy clearly highlights Renault’s intent to cover all segments of the SUV market—from cost-conscious buyers to those seeking cutting-edge hybrid tech.
Hybrid Details
While official hybrid powertrain specifications for India are still a closely guarded secret, clues from the European Dacia range provide some insight. The Duster Hybrid overseas employs a 1.6-litre petrol engine accompanied by a 36 kW motor and a 1.2 kWh battery to produce 139 hp. This combination is said to achieve a fuel efficiency of 20 km/l.
The European Bigster Hybrid is more energetic with a 1.8-litre petrol motor and the same 36 kW motor along with a 1.4 kWh battery. Though it is bigger and has an output of 154 hp, its efficiency is 21 km/l. These numbers indicate that Indian models, though potentially detuned, may yield comparable advantages.
4×4 Hybrid and CNG Variant in the Works
Autocar suggests that a 4×4 hybrid version could be possible, with a second electric motor driving the rear wheels, which would make the Bigster and Duster even more useable. Although not confirmed, this would be sector first, bringing hybrid efficiency to off-road ability.
In addition to hybrid variants, factory-installed CNG models are being contemplated as well. Renault currently sells CNG kits for the Kwid, Kiger, and Triber. Adding this to the Duster and Bigster is a logical step, particularly since CNG demand has been increasing in India.
Production & Launch Timeline
Production of the new-gen Duster starts in September 2025, with a market launch in early 2026. The bigger, three-row Bigster follows later, possibly in the second half of 2026. When launched, the Bigster will face off directly with established models such as Hyundai Alcazar.
