Hyundai’s electric dreams faced a harsh reality check last month. Despite offering a hefty ₹4 lakh discount on its premium EV, the Ioniq 5, the car found only 11 takers in May. Even with this price cut, interest from customers remained cold, pushing Hyundai down to third place in overall sales for the month.
Sales Report: May Numbers Disappoint
May turned out to be the most disappointing month of the year for Hyundai Motor India. The brand fell from the second to the third spot in the overall car sales chart. While SUVs like Creta, Venue, and Exter had steady demand, the Ioniq 5 and Tucson saw the weakest numbers.
The Ioniq 5 recorded its lowest monthly sales yet, with only 11 units sold in May. That’s even lower than January and February, when it sold 16 units each, or March, when the number slightly rose to 19.
Heavy Discount But No Impact
Hyundai introduced the Ioniq 5 in January 2023 with a price tag of ₹44.95 lakh. Since then, its cost has increased to ₹46.05 lakh. In an attempt to clear remaining stock, the company announced a massive ₹4 lakh discount, bringing the price down to ₹42.05 lakh. However, even this aggressive offer couldn’t attract buyers.
The demand for Hyundai’s upcoming Creta EV appears to be overshadowing the Ioniq 5, as customers hold out for newer options.
Design, Cabin & Materials
The Ioniq 5 measures 4634mm in length, 1890mm in width, and 1625mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3000mm. The cabin showcases Hyundai’s eco-friendly approach, using recycled and bio-based materials across the dashboard, door trims, armrests, and even the steering wheel. Soft-touch surfaces and pixel design elements add a futuristic feel to the interior.
Interior Tech & Features
Inside, the car offers a dual 12.3-inch screen layout combining the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. There’s also a head-up display for added convenience. Key features include an electric parking brake, four-disc brakes, power child lock, and virtual engine sound.
The Ioniq 5 boasts Level 2 ADAS with 21 safety features, including 6 airbags and multi-collision avoidance braking, enhancing safety on the road.
Battery, Charging & Range
This electric SUV packs a 72.6kWh battery and delivers a certified driving range of 631 km on a single charge, as per ARAI. It features a rear-wheel-drive setup powered by an electric motor generating 217hp and 350Nm of torque.
Charging is fast and convenient—thanks to its 800V system, Hyundai claims the Ioniq 5 can go from 10% to 80% battery in just 18 minutes using a superfast charger.
