India’s top SUV: SUVs have dominated the Indian car market with their muscular road presence, improved ground clearance, and generous interiors. As a result of this growing popularity, small car sales have fallen drastically. Maruti Suzuki has established itself once again as the master of this segment. Let’s see the five SUVs that are now the best bet for Indian middle-class families.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza

Maruti Suzuki Brezza is now the highest-selling SUV in May 2025. Last month, it retailed 15,556 units, which reflected a virtually 10% increase from May 2024. While a bit higher at 16,971 units in April 2025, this model remains in the number one position in both the sub-4-meter and total SUV sales rankings. The popularity of Brezza has enabled Maruti to occupy a powerful position in the SUV segment.

It is a part of the compact SUV class. Through constant sales figures, Brezza is still a top player in the competitive market, posing a benchmark for other players.

Hyundai Creta

Having topped the charts in April, Hyundai Creta fell to the second spot in May 2025. Its total sales of 14,860 units combined all petrol, diesel, and electric models. Even with the fall from rank, Creta had a 1.3% year-on-year sales growth. It also placed Hyundai on the third position for overall car sales, bypassing Tata Motors.

Creta is available in petrol, diesel, and EV options. It remains a consistent performer and a key model in Hyundai’s lineup.

Mahindra Scorpio

Mahindra Scorpio maintained its third position in the list of best-selling SUVs. In May 2025, the company dispatched 14,401 units of the Scorpio, an increase of 5% compared to last year’s 13,717 units sold in May. The SUV performed better in April at 15,534 units, but it still played a major role in Mahindra’s performance and remained the second-highest selling car brand in India during the month.

Scorpio also continues to do well in urban and rural markets with ruggedness and brand value.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx

Maruti Suzuki Fronx is another vehicle which reported good numbers. It retailed 13,584 units in May 2025, a 7% rise over May 2024. In April 2025, it had retailed 14,345 units. It is the second best-selling Maruti SUV after Brezza.

Fronx is becoming increasingly popular and leads in the SUV segment due to its aggressive pricing strategy and brand belief.

Tata Punch

Tata Punch re-entered the top 5 with 13,133 units sold in May 2025. Even though sales fell by 31% from last year, and it had slipped out of the top 5 in April, it still managed to outsell Nexon by just 31 units this time.

Even with the drop in sales, Punch is still a sought-after compact SUV with great market recall and budget-friendly price tag.
