The central government has announced that to date, 10.33 crore underprivileged families are receiving subsidized LPG gas through the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). The total number of active domestic LPG consumers in the nation has now reached 32.94 crore.
On Thursday, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi informed the Lok Sabha that the international price of LPG has risen from $385 per metric tonne in July 2023 to $629 in February 2025. In spite of this increase, the government has lowered the price of domestic LPG for Ujjwala beneficiaries from Rs 903 in August 2023 to Rs 503 in February 2025.
Cylinder is available to Ujjwala beneficiaries for Rs 503
India relies on imports for 60 percent of its domestic LPG requirements, which means that local LPG prices are influenced by international market trends. Currently, the retail price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi stands at Rs 803. However, with a subsidy of Rs 300 provided under the Ujjwala scheme, this cylinder is available to Ujjwala beneficiaries for Rs 503.
It is important to highlight that the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched in May 2016 with the objective of providing LPG connections to women from economically disadvantaged families without requiring any deposit. The initial target was to deliver 8 crore connections in the first phase, which was successfully completed by September 2019. Subsequently, the scheme was expanded to cover additional underprivileged families under Ujjwala 2.0.
The average consumption of gas cylinders among Ujjwala beneficiaries has risen
Thanks to government initiatives, the average consumption of gas cylinders among Ujjwala beneficiaries has risen. In the fiscal year 2019-20, families used an average of 3.01 cylinders, which has increased to 4.43 in 2024-25. Furthermore, LPG coverage in the country has grown from 62 percent in 2016 to nearly universal access today.
The government is actively engaging with the public through various promotional campaigns, registration camps, and online applications to encourage LPG usage. To date, public sector oil companies have appointed 7,959 new gas distributors, with 93 percent of them located in rural areas.
The adoption of LPG has significantly improved the lives of poor families, particularly benefiting women.
