Krishna Kumar Yadav, Postmaster General of North Gujarat region, said that so far 4.67 lakh daughters’ accounts have been opened in North Gujarat. This figure has reached 15.72 lakh across Gujarat. Apart from this, 711 villages of North Gujarat have been declared “Sukanya Samriddhi Gram”, where an account has been opened in post offices for daughters in every house.

Postmen are becoming the future makers of daughters

Krishna Kumar Yadav said that whenever a daughter is born in a house in these villages, the postman immediately reaches there and starts the process of opening her account. This service is not only a social responsibility but has also become an emotional attachment for the families.

Start daughter’s provident fund scheme for just ₹ 250

Under Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, an account can be opened in any post office with only ₹ 250. Girls up to the age of 10 years are eligible for this scheme. An amount of ₹250 to ₹1.5 lakh can be deposited in a financial year. After opening the account, the money has to be deposited for 15 years, and 50% of the amount can be withdrawn at the age of 18, while the entire amount can be withdrawn after 21 years.

Highest interest and tax exemption

This scheme currently offers 8.2% interest, which is more than any other small savings scheme. Also, tax exemption is also available on an amount up to ₹1.5 lakh under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act.

For the success of this scheme, the Postal Department is organizing postal chaupals in villages, awareness campaigns in schools and fairs. Postmaster General Yadav said that this scheme is being linked to campaigns like “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” so that it can take the form of a mass movement.
