Jute cultivation in India

If we talk about the country, special crops are grown according to the climate and jute is also included in these crops. Jute is cultivated on a large scale in eastern India. Big states like West Bengal, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh are also included in the list of jute producing states. The fertile alluvial soil of the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta is considered most suitable for jute cultivation.

Good news for farmers

The central government has increased the price of jute by 6 percent. This easily increases the income of farmers. Talking about the whole world, more than 50 percent of jute is produced in India itself. Apart from this, Bangladesh, China, and Thailand are also jute-producing countries. The increase in the minimum support price (MSP) of jute by the government is a big incentive for farmers. The MSP of raw jute (TD-3 grade) for the marketing season 2025-26 has been fixed at ₹5650 per quintal, which is ₹315 per quintal more than the previous season.

When and how to do it

The field should be prepared well for jute cultivation. For this, do deep plowing 2-3 times in the field. Jute can be sown between March and April after harvesting wheat and mustard. Jute cultivation requires warm and humid climate (24°C to 38°C temperature and more than 80% humidity) and 150-200 cm of rainfall. Alluvial or loamy soil with good drainage is best for this.

Earnings from jute cultivation

The jute crop is ready in about 4 months. The yield of jute can be up to 25-30 quintals per hectare. At an MSP of ₹5650 per quintal, one can earn about ₹1.4 lakh to ₹1.7 lakh from one hectare. Farmers can earn good profits even after recovering the cost. Apart from this, additional income can also be earned by directly selling products made from jute (such as bags, ropes, and decorative items).
