8th Pay Commission: Government Clarifies Report Timeline and Implementation Date, Check Now

8th Pay Commission: The primary concern for nearly 7 million central government employees and pensioners in the country is: when will the 8th Pay Commission be put into effect? It has been over nine months since the commission was established on November 3, 2025, yet it has not delivered its report. Recently, the central government provided an update in Parliament. They made it clear that the framework for the new salaries, allowances, and pensions has not been finalized, and no date has been set for their implementation.

In a statement made in Parliament, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary responded to a written inquiry in the Lok Sabha, indicating that the 8th Central Pay Commission has yet to present its recommendations. Consequently, employees and pensioners will need to wait longer to find out about the new salary structure, increased DA, allowances, and retirement benefits.

This uncertainty has sparked both curiosity and concern among the 35.77 lakh employees and 33.76 lakh pensioners affected by this Pay Commission. While defense pensioners are not included in this count, the total number of individuals impacted is around 7 million.

What are the demands of pensioner organizations?

The Bharat Pensioners’ Society (BPS), representing approximately 1 million pensioners, met with Commission officials on August 7th and made some significant demands. Currently, dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) are revised only twice a year (January and July). The organization demands that these revisions be made every three months (quarterly) to account for rising inflation. Once the dearness allowance (DR) crosses 25%, it should be merged with the basic pension to maintain pensioners’ purchasing power.

The BPS has also proposed setting a minimum pension of Rs 45,000 and a minimum basic salary of Rs 69,000. They have demanded a fitment factor of 3.83 for salary and pension increases, which is in line with the recommendations of the NC-JCM Staff Side. They have also called for salary and pension reviews to be conducted every five years to prevent losses due to a long 10-year gap.

However, the 8th Pay Commission has until May 2027 to submit its final recommendations. Therefore, central employees and pensioners will have to wait for the Commission’s official report to know the exact details of the new pay scales and allowances.
