New Delhi: In light of the recent symbolic “people’s impeachment” motion passed against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Saturday, the opposition “India” alliance is hosting a large rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan today. Leaders and supporters from various opposition parties across multiple states have gathered in the national capital to take part in the “Delhi Chalo” march and rally, aimed at protesting election process irregularities and calling for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Strict security measures have been implemented for the event.
The rally is anticipated to attract 1 million attendees, with the police deploying over 4,000 personnel to manage security and crowd control. The event will kick off at noon with a “Chalo Delhi” march starting from the Minto Road-Connaught Place junction and proceeding to Ramlila Maidan. The rally at Ramlila Maidan is scheduled to take place from 12 noon to 5 pm. Leaders from the “India” alliance will ride in open buses from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence to the march’s starting point.
Participants are expected to include leaders and supporters from opposition parties, student groups, and civil society organizations. The “India” alliance has encouraged students, youth, women, and workers to join the rally. The “Cockroach Janata Party” (CJP) and several student organizations have also shown their support for the movement.
Preparations at Ramlila Maidan have been underway for several days. A large tricolor canopy has been constructed over the main stage designated for senior opposition leaders, while a second stage has been arranged for representatives from the state units of the “India” alliance. Rows of white tents have been erected around the grounds. Metal barriers have been installed to control the flow of people, and temporary stages have been erected. Trucks carrying chairs and other materials are also constantly arriving at the venue.
