Jio and Airtel have tied up with SpaceX to distribute Starlink service. This will enable high-speed internet access in rural and remote areas.
SpaceX is yet to receive official launch permission from the Indian government. Regulatory approval is awaited to launch the service.
Jio will help with customer support, installation and service activation. Airtel and Jio will sell Starlink equipment through retail networks.
Starlink's main priority is to deliver internet service in rural and remote areas, where laying fiber-optic cables is difficult.
According to experts, this service will not compete with Jio and Airtel's existing fiber broadband, but will complement it.
Starlink is priced higher than Indian broadband plans. Its monthly plans range from $10 to $500, while the hardware costs $250 to $380.
Starlink's expensive price and limited speed are a hindrance to making it competitive in the Indian market.
