This rule applies equally to all classes—General, Sleeper, Third AC, Second AC, and First AC. The most important condition here is that you will only receive a full refund if you do not travel on that train. If you board the train despite it being late, you will not be able to claim any refund under this rule.

How to File a TDR from Home

If your train is severely delayed and you do not wish to travel, you will need to file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) to receive a refund. This process is completely digital and can be done from your phone. First, log in to the official IRCTC website or app with your user ID and password. Then, go to the ‘My Account’ section and click on the ‘My Transactions’ option.

Here, you will see a ‘File TDR’ button. Clicking on it will bring up a list of your booked tickets. Select the specific ticket you wish to cancel and select the correct reason from the dropdown menu, i.e., “Train Late More Than 3 Hours and Passenger Not Traveled.” After submitting your request, it will be sent to the Railways.

When and how is the refund received

Once you successfully file a TDR, the Railways review your claim. They check their system to determine whether the train in question was indeed delayed by more than 3 hours and whether the passenger on that PNR did not travel.

Once the verification process is complete, your full ticket fare is credited back to the same bank account, credit card, or UPI wallet you used for the payment. This entire process typically takes 5 to 10 working days. You will also be notified of the refund status via email or SMS.

Keep these important things in mind

It is crucial to be mindful of timing when filing a refund claim. According to the rules, you must file a TDR before the train’s actual departure or immediately after chart preparation. If you delay too much, the Railways may reject your request.

Also, if you have an offline ticket purchased from the station counter, online TDR will not work. In such a case, you will have to surrender the ticket at the railway station counter and obtain a refund receipt. Remember, once a TDR is filed, you cannot travel on that ticket; doing so is considered legally invalid.
