New Delhi: Since the arrest of the Venezuelan president, US President Donald Trump has been issuing a series of new statements. He is also keeping a close eye on countries that are not openly supporting the US action on the Venezuelan issue. India, without naming the US, called the arrest of Nicolás Maduro a violation of international law.
Now, US President Donald Trump has once again threatened India with increased tariffs. Donald Trump said on Monday that if New Delhi does not cooperate on the Russian oil issue, the US could further increase tariffs on Indian imports. Donald Trump made these remarks while addressing the public. The US wants India to stop buying oil from Russia.

What did Donald Trump say?
US President Donald Trump said on Monday, “They actually wanted to make me happy. PM Modi is a very good man. He’s a good person. He knew I wasn’t happy. It was important to make me happy. We can increase tariffs on them very quickly.”
Trump was referring to India’s oil trade with Russia, which his administration has long opposed. The oil trade with Russia was cited as one of the reasons behind doubling tariffs on India to 50% in August 2025. These statements have now increased tensions regarding India’s burgeoning relations with Russia.

In fact, his statement comes months after he claimed to have received assurances that India would stop importing oil from Russia. But that did not happen. However, the Indian government completely rejected Donald Trump’s claim.
